How to prepare for an obstetric ultrasound

A simple checklist to help you arrive calmly and make the most of your time with the medical team.

Preparing in advance can make your visit more comfortable and help the team access the information they need. Instructions vary by study, so the most important recommendation is to confirm them directly with the center.

Educational information

This content does not diagnose conditions or replace a consultation, an emergency evaluation, or instructions from your healthcare professional.

Before leaving home

Confirm the time, location, and type of ultrasound ordered. If your physician provided an order or a specific clinical reason, bring it along with reports from previous studies.

  • Identification and up-to-date contact information.
  • Medical order, if provided.
  • Relevant previous ultrasounds, tests, or reports.
  • A list of medications and important medical conditions.
  • Questions you would like to discuss with the professional.

Should I drink water or have a full bladder?

It depends on the study and the stage of pregnancy. Some early transabdominal ultrasounds may require a moderately full bladder; others do not. A transvaginal ultrasound usually requires an empty bladder.

Do not assume a generic preparation. Follow the instructions provided when you book, because drinking too much water can also be uncomfortable.

During and after the study

Wear comfortable two-piece clothing for easy access to the abdomen. Tell the professional if you feel pain, dizziness, or discomfort. Fetal position can affect the images, and the specialist may need to wait or change the viewing angle.

Before leaving, ask when the report will be ready, how you will receive your images, and which professional should review the results. At CEMAFE, images can be delivered digitally for phone access and sharing with your treating physician.

Preparation instructions may vary. Always confirm the directions for your appointment by WhatsApp or phone.
